The Conn Smythe Trophy winner as playoff MVP in Anaheim's first Stanley Cup championship last season, D Scott Niedermayer has the Ducks primed for another run this year. Niedermayer announced his return to the Ducks on Dec. 5, he was placed on the active roster Dec. 15 and made his 2007-08 debut Dec. 16. The Ducks posted the NHL's best points percentage after Niedermayer's return (32-12-4, .708).

Niedermayer finished the 2007 Stanley Cup Playoffs third among NHL defensemen in scoring with 11 points (three goals, eight assists) in 21 games. Niedermayer scored two playoff overtime goals, tied for the most by a defenseman in one playoff year. His first was the series-winning goal in Game 5 of the Conference Semifinal against the Vancouver Canucks on May 3, at 4:30 of the second overtime period. His second OT goal came at Detroit in Game 2 of the Western Conference Final, a 4-3 victory May 13, scored at 14:17. Additionally, he scored the game-tying goal with 48 seconds left before Teemu Selanne scored in OT to give the Ducks a crucial 2-1 victory in Game 5 of the Western Conference Final at Detroit May 20.

Niedermayer has won four Stanley Cup championships since making his NHL debut with the New Jersey Devils during the 1991-92 season, the most among active players. He is the only player in hockey history to have won a Stanley Cup, Olympic Gold Medal, World Championship, World Cup, Memorial Cup and World Junior title. Niedermayer has been named a Norris Trophy finalist each of the past three seasons, winning the award in 2004.
